This is a long overdue introduction but I think that this newsletter has reached a point where an official welcoming is necessary. The audience at the moment consists of 80 subscribers, of whom less than half are active readers. Nonetheless, you guys have shown your support in various ways which in all its subtlety was very unexpected. Be it word of mouth, likes, shares, comments, and talking with me personally, it has given me a sense of worth I never knew I possessed. But it also showed me humility.
Therefore I would like to welcome you and present to you some of my ideas for the extra content in this publication.
Let us start with the basics.
My name is John Krimitsas, I am a Master's student in Physics and a writer. I was born in Athens, Greece, and currently live in Padova, Italy. Now, what exactly am I doing on Substack, writing about philosophy, psychology and culture? When I find out I'll let you guys know. What I do know however, is that through this Newsletter I will attempt to express my collected thoughts on various topics.
The main reason for launching this Newsletter is my need to know the truth. What I hate the most is when my mind is pulled into diametrically opposite directions. Perhaps someone would deal with this by randomly picking a side thus lazily ending the mental conflict. But me? I lose sleep over it.
I remember a couple of years ago I was watching a debate. I was absolutely certain that "my side" would win. I knew the speaker, he was witty and wise, and my mind was made up. To my surprise, that debate was his first ever misstep. I was crushed. I couldn't sleep. The jabs of the opponent were still pounding inside my head for hours. The echoes lasted for a few days. Then I immediately got to work. Although I wasn't an avid reader back then, I listened for hours upon hours to experts dealing with the debated issue. I never lost faith in myself or the truth for I knew my disquiet was a sign.
This event was such a blow to my certainties it humbled me. It showed me how weakly supported were my beliefs.
All this to say that thoughts are easily manipulated. After all, the greatest person to fool is yourself. Forming an opinion based on collected information is a basic procedure. The hard part comes when trying to carefully put together that information in order to form any kind of structure, from a mere sentence to whole essays or books.
Overall, writing is no joke. It is the deepest form of thinking, the disentanglement of complex thoughts, and the way to articulate yourself in an honest manner. In order to achieve this, aspiring writers have to follow a specific thread: pick a problem, read a bit about it, and start writing. If you get stuck, read some more. If you get stuck again, read even more
That being said, welcome to John Krimitsas' Newsletter where I try to do just that.
What to expect
All the essays you are going to read here (excluding any spontaneous craziness on my part) will be a product of great effort and always backed by research, books or other sources. Sometimes, the greatest source is life itself. As I have stated elsewhere, what lacks in today's world is honest voices. Not flawless, that would be impossible, but honest. When discussing difficult topics, nuance is mandatory.
There are however, instances where the truth is definitive.
In this Newsletter I will not shy away from pointing out the truths that help us understand the world and ultimately function as guides for how to act in it.
Your free subscription grants you access to all my writings and the complete archive. A paid subscription contains the benefit of being able to post comments and gives you access to one brand new voice-over every month. The voice-overs work as complementary to the written content and are extremely useful to exploit when multitasking during your day. You will find them in a separate section on the main page.
Therefore, if you are weird enough to enjoy listening to my coarse and staunch Greek accent and wish to share your comments with the community, please consider upgrading your subscription!
I sincerely hope my work will provide you with new knowledge and assist you to properly structure your established opinions. Do not hesitate to text me personally on Substack in case you wish to share your feedback!
As always, thank you for reading.
